So this week I got to take my oldest daughter to our first father daughter dance. When my wife and I gave birth to a girl I knew this day was coming sooner or later. If you know me at all you know that a dance is not exactly my forte. I believe in high school I went to three dances and not once did I actually dance. My wedding reception didn't include dancing either. I am not a dancer!
I do know that being a father and a husband God calls me to put away my own issues and so I knew that when the opportunity came for my daughter and me to attend the dance I had to take advantage. As a father I am responsible to raise my daughter to love Jesus Christ and follow him but I'm also charged to teach her what she should expect from a husband. This is why it is so important to take your daughters on dates. Open the door for her, treat her like you would expect her future husband to treat her so that her expectations are set very high. Spend time with her, love her because you won't get the opportunity to teach her and model for her for very long.
My observations of the dance were very interesting. Many fathers didn't seem to know what to do, many just played with their blackberries or talked with one another while their girls played with their friends and I know of many who didn't even attend the dance. There were a select few who danced with their daughters and had a good time, that includes me. I hate to dance but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to dance with my daughter! I would suggest you find a way to dance with your daughter as well.
